Radio, both broadcast radio and ham radio, has a long tradition of assembly taking place on the kitchen table. Initially, licenses to build broadcast receivers were very expensive. As time went on, it wasn’t licensing that was costly, it was labor. Parts were cheap because wars kept producing surpluses of parts that gave kit-makers the basis for large business volumes and quantity sales.
